Basseterre, St. Kitts – The nation is in mourning following the untimely passing of young leader and promising law student, Malakhi Ferguson. Attorney General Garth Wilkin joined countless others in paying heartfelt tribute to Ferguson, whose sudden death yesterday has left the community in shock and sorrow.
In an emotional statement, Wilkin reflected on Ferguson’s exceptional potential and the profound impact he had made in his short but impactful life. “It is with the heaviest of hearts that I write this short message of condolences to the family and friends of Malakhi Ferguson, a good young man taken away from us way too soon,” Wilkin shared.
Wilkin recounted meeting Ferguson in October 2020 while serving as his mooting coach for a Bar Association Mock Trial held during Law Week. “These are photos I took, on the day of the Mock Trial, of this smart, ambitious, hardworking young man who was destined for greatness in law (or any other career he chose),” Wilkin wrote.
The Attorney General also highlighted Ferguson’s leadership and dedication as a key member of the St. Kitts National Youth Parliament Association (SKNYPA) and as President of the St. Kitts-Nevis Student Association at UWI Cave Hill. Wilkin recalled Ferguson’s passion for public service and advocacy, noting that his first non-governmental public speaking event as Attorney General was at Ferguson’s invitation to a SKNYPA town hall.
“Less than two months ago, he wrote to me in his capacity as President of the St. Kitts-Nevis Student Association to collaborate on an initiative he had planned, and we’d discussed him interning at the Attorney General’s Office,” Wilkin shared.
The tragic loss of Ferguson has shaken Wilkin and the broader community. “Life really is fleeting,” Wilkin reflected. “We must learn from lessons like this, of lives taken way too soon, to live life to its fullest and to focus on positivity and prayer, as long life isn’t guaranteed.”
Wilkin’s tribute concluded with a message to Ferguson’s family and friends: “My thoughts and prayers are with you. He didn’t live long, but his impact will endure in the hearts of the many lives he touched, including mine. He will never be forgotten. Sleep in Eternal Peace, young man. ”
Ferguson’s passing has left a void in St. Kitts and Nevis, but his legacy as a rising star in law and leadership will continue to inspire. As the nation mourns, tributes continue to pour in for the bright young man who touched so many lives with his passion, ambition, and dedication to his community.
