News Americas, BRONX, NY, Weds. Aug. 23, 2017:A 14-year-old  born Montserrat immigrant is dead after collapsing during football practice at  a Bronx, NY school, New York Police say.

Dominick Bess, a student Mount Saint Michael Academy died shortly after he was reported as unresponsive on the field of the school, located at 4300 Murdock Ave. in Wakefield, around 9:30 a.m., according to the NYPD.

The incoming freshman was rushed to Montefiore Medical Center North Division where he was pronounced dead, an NYPD spokeswoman said.

A school’s spokesperson said Bess collapsed during “non-contact” practice.

Bess and the other students were outside exercising in shorts and T-shirts, and were not wearing pads at the time, a source told News 12 The Bronx. School staff tried to resuscitate Bess using a defibrillator before emergency medical specialists arrived, News 12 reported. Although the defibrillator had not been the solution to the problem in this case, they are crucial pieces of medical equipment for schools to have. The more portable the better, for example this philips onsite AED would help staff to respond to an emergency in the fastest time possible.

“Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends, as well as coaches, the team and our student athletes,” spokeswoman Lisa Bennett said in a letter posted to Facebook and Twitter.

Family friend Mervin Harrigan, 48,  told AMNews that the teen was supposed to make the whole island of Montserrat proud.

The city medical examiner’s office will now determine his cause of death.
