Howard University Mourns Loss of St.Kitts rooted Civil Rights Lawyer Kiah Duggins in Tragic Plane Crash at Reagan National Airport

Washington, D.C. – In a statement released with heavy hearts, Howard University has confirmed the tragic death of Professor Kiah Duggins, a distinguished civil rights attorney and incoming professor at the Howard University School of Law. Duggins was among the victims of a mid-air plane collision that occurred near Reagan National Airport.

Professor Duggins, whose family roots are in Sandy Point, St. Kitts, was set to begin her tenure as a professor this fall, where she had hoped to continue her tireless work in advocating for justice. As a civil rights lawyer, Duggins was dedicated to addressing systemic issues such as unconstitutional policing and the unjust practices surrounding money bail. Throughout her career, she worked to bring change in Tennessee, Texas, and Washington, D.C., using her legal expertise to fight for marginalized communities.

“Professor Duggins’ contributions to the fight for civil rights were immense, and her loss is felt deeply by all who knew her,” said a statement from the Howard University School of Law. “She was a fierce advocate for justice and an inspiring mentor to those who worked with her. Her legacy will continue to inspire us.”

The university extended its condolences to Professor Duggins’ family, students, and colleagues, requesting privacy and respect during this difficult time. Plans to honor her memory and contributions will be shared in the coming days.

In the wake of this devastating loss, Howard University encourages its community to utilize available support resources, with details shared in a graphic accompanying the statement.
