Martinelli was arrested on Monday June 12 at his home in an exclusive residential area of Miami’s southern Florida state and is being sought in Panama to respond on charges of illegal wiretapping against a hundred opponents.
A few hours after his arrest, on June 13, Judge Torres denied the first request for bail, which included a deposit of one million dollars.
This afternoon the ex-governor attended a new hearing, during which the prosecution and defense filed their arguments on a motion to be released on bail.
After hearing the parties, the judge took a period of one week to review the issue, which is why Martinelli had to return to the Federal Detention Center in Miami, A building adjacent to the Court of the Southern District of the city.
The defense of the former president emphasized the motions sent the day before, one on the amount to pay and another to dismiss the case with the argument that Panama’s arrest warrant in his extradition request is ‘invalid’ and ‘undue.’
In an attempt described as desperate by his country’s means, the former president’s lawyers sent a letter to the judge with a $ 5 million bail proposal, which purports to dispel any doubts about potential flight.
In addition, they said they were willing to accept the movement limitation, the limited use of transport that dictates the court and the use of the electronic bracelet for the permanent monitoring of the place where it is.
However, the Office of the Prosecutor, Which represents the Panamanian state, claimed in today’s hearing that there is risk of flight, as Martinelli is a millionaire who owns his own plane.
In one of the motions, the defense also referred to the political nature of the extradition process, arguing that the arrest occurred only a week before the visit to the White House of the head of State of Panama, Juan Carlos Varela.
Asked Tuesday about the Martinelli affair after leaving a forum in Washington DC, Varela said that those are questions of the judicial system.
“I am president of the executive body, so I respect the judicial issues a lot,” he said a day after his meeting in the capital with US President Donald Trump.
