LEAKED VIDEO SHOWING CONDITIONS AT ST.KITTS PRISON HIGHLIGHTS THE URGENCY FOR TEAM UNITY GOVERNMENT TO START CONSTRUCTION OF NEW PRISON FACILITY
The recent release via social media of a video leaked from Her Majesty;s Prison on St.Kitts has highlighted the urgent need for the start of construction of the recently announced new Prison Facility .
The video recorded by an inmate revealed the unsanitary conditions in which the prisoners live. The small cell shown in the video shows an extremely small cell crammed with 5 inmates on what looks like make-shift bunk beds. There is also a toilet and a face basin also in the hugely unhealthy looking living area or cell.
In an early February Press Conference Prime Minister and Minister of National Security Dr. Hon. Timothy Harris revealed that plans are well on the way for the construction of a new Prison Faciliy on St.Kitts. The Team Unity Administration has been making a concerted effort to have the construction of the facility begin shortly, as the design for the penitentiary is being finalized. National Security Minister Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris gave an update on the project at a recent press briefing.
“I am pleased to report that in 2017 we have made provision for significant work on the new correctional facility to be built in Estridge, so we have provided $2 million plus for the design of this facility,” PM Harris revealed to the media at one of his regular Press Conferences.
PM Harris continued “The design and complete tender documents would include detailed drawings, bills of quantity so we can put this project on a go.”
The jail is located in downtown Basseterre and was built in the 1800’s to hold some 60 persons. The present prison population is near 200 persons. Approximately two dozen inmates are housed at the minimum security Prison Farm on Nevis.
