Buckleys, St.Kitts (September 25th, 2018):-Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris recently announced that the abandoned Buckley’s plantation is being redeveloped for preservation as a national heritage site of national significance. Prime Minister Harris made the announcement at the recent National Heroes Statue Unveiling Ceremony at the spectacular National Heroes Park. The Team Unity Government has commissioned a committee that will provide advice to the government regarding the nature and course of the development.
Senator Akilah Byron-Nisbett chairs the Committee which will spearhead the development of the Buckleys Uprising Heritage Site Development, a national effort.
The full committee comprises Senator Byron-Nisbet as Chairperson along with Stanley Franks Jr., Samande “Ras Iyah” Reid, Troy “Biff” Mills, Mrs Charisse Gumbs, Toni Frederick-Armstrong and Livingston “Livi” Huggins.
“Our committee has been asked to determine and pursue the best approach and the best way to memoralise the actual events of the event back in 1935. One thing to note is that Buckley Estate was never identified as a Heritage Site and asa result the lands were free for sale. The Lands were sold but the committee’s first order of business , with the support of the Team Unity government, is to negotiate with the owners to have some form of monument erected at the site,” stated Senator Hon. Akilah Byron-Nisbet .
Reflecting on the Buckley’s Riots of January1935, Prime Minister, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris said, at a commemoration ceremony at Buckley’s Estate, that is it critically important that the citizens reflect upon the ideas behind the uprising, which were ideas for growth, development and ideas for the salvation of the nation.
