PM Drew Meets King Charles III in London: Talks on Sustainability and Youth, but Republic Transition Remains Unclear

Basseterre, St. Kitts (January 24, 2025) – While off the island in London, Prime Minister Dr. Hon. Terrance Drew had an audience with His Majesty King Charles III at Sandringham Estate. In a social media statement following the meeting, PM Drew highlighted their discussions on topics of shared interest, including sustainability, the environment, youth advocacy, and education.

“Today, I had the pleasure of visiting His Majesty King Charles III at Sandringham Estate, where we discussed matters of mutual interest, including sustainability, the environment, youth advocacy, and education. His Majesty’s passion for advancing these issues is evident.

We pledged to continue working together for a better and more sustainable world. I wish him and his family well,” Drew shared.

However, the meeting has raised questions about whether PM Drew addressed his government’s pledge to transition St. Kitts and Nevis into a republic, effectively removing the British monarch as the head of state.

In September 2023, during an address to the nation, PM Drew declared:
“Our nation is much closer to true independence than not. As we approach 40 years as an independent nation in 2023, we also set our eyes on transitioning into a republic. We trod on towards that goal. That goal of self-determination and self-actualisation where we truly encapsulate our sovereignty.”

The absence of any mention of the republic agenda in PM Drew’s statement about the meeting has prompted speculation about whether the topic was broached with the King. Critics and political observers have questioned whether Drew remains committed to his pledge or if the sensitive nature of the conversation influenced its omission.

As St. Kitts and Nevis continues its journey toward “true independence,” the public will undoubtedly look for more definitive actions and updates from the government on this significant constitutional shift. For now, the meeting underscores an ongoing dialogue between the Federation and the British monarchy, with sustainability, education, and advocacy taking center stage.
