PM Drew and Premier Brantley Meet, But “Fair Share” for Nevis Remains Elusive

Basseterre, St. Kitts – February 6th, 2025 – Prime Minister Dr. Hon. Terrance Drew and Premier of Nevis Hon. Mark Brantley met yesterday to discuss a range of national issues, but the long-standing matter of Nevis’ “Fair Share” was seemingly absent from the discussions.

Despite the urgency placed on the Fair Share issue during the 2022 election campaign, nearly three years into the SKN Labour administration, Nevisians remain without the equitable financial allocation they were promised. The demand for a Fair Share was a critical factor in the collapse of the former Team Unity government led by then-Prime Minister Dr. Hon. Timothy Harris. However, since taking office, PM Drew has yet to deliver on that commitment, and Premier Brantley appears content with the current arrangement.

Under the ongoing fiscal arrangement, Nevis receives an annual $66 million in budgetary support—an initiative introduced by Dr. Harris’ administration. Notably, Premier Brantley has publicly acknowledged that this figure falls far short of what Nevis truly deserves. Yet, in his public remarks following his meeting with PM Drew, Brantley made no mention of pressing for increased financial allocations.

Taking to social media, Premier Brantley shared, “Yesterday the Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew and I met to discuss our country and the strengthening of relations between St. Kitts and Nevis. We have continued to engage in such discussions as we navigate a complex socio-economic and socio-political landscape nationally, regionally, and internationally. Our discussions were open and engaging and I thank PM for his time and continuing efforts at nation building.”

With no indication that the Fair Share matter was raised during the discussions, concerns continue to mount among Nevisians about whether their longstanding financial grievances will ever be meaningfully addressed under the current administration.
