OVER 6,000 TRAFFIC TICKETS ISSUED IN ST. KITTS AND NEVIS IN 2024

Traffic violations remain a significant challenge for law enforcement in St. Kitts and Nevis, with the police force issuing a staggering 6,740 traffic tickets in 2024, according to newly released data.

Speaking on WINN FM on January 20, Sergeant Sophia Henry highlighted that St. Kitts accounted for the majority of violations, emphasizing ongoing concerns about road safety. Of the total tickets issued, 4,278 have been paid.

Speeding Tickets Lead the Violations
Speeding emerged as a major issue, with 936 tickets issued for this infraction alone. St. Kitts accounted for 886 of these, underscoring the island’s persistent struggles with excessive speeds. Of these, 622 tickets have been paid, while 164 cases are pending, 96 remain unpaid, and four were canceled.

Sergeant Henry reminded the public of increased fines for delayed payments of speeding tickets and additional penalties for exceeding speed limits by every 10 miles per hour.

Rising Accidents and Fatalities
The Federation recorded 1,700 road accidents in 2024, with 1,345 reported in St. Kitts and 439 in Nevis. Alarmingly, eight fatal accidents led to 12 deaths, marking a troubling rise in road-related fatalities. Speeding and driver distractions were identified as primary causes of these incidents.

Growing Traffic Challenges
Adding to the strain on road safety, the territory saw the registration of 2,039 new vehicles in 2024, contributing to increased congestion and risks on the roads.

Law enforcement officials continue to urge drivers to adhere to traffic regulations to ensure safety for all road users. With the data highlighting the urgent need for improved road safety measures, authorities are calling on the public to play their part in reducing accidents and violations.
