OUTRAGE AS PM DREW TOUGHENS TRAFFIC LAWS WHILE DR. WILLIAMS’ DRIVER REMAINS FREE!

Basseterre, St. Kitts – As the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis introduces tougher fines and penalties for traffic violations, a glaring contradiction looms over the administration’s approach to justice—the mystery surrounding the driver responsible for the high-profile vehicular homicide involving Dr. Simoneth Williams remains unsolved.

In a move to crack down on reckless driving and enhance road safety, Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew, spearheaded the Vehicles and Road Traffic (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which was passed during the January 30 sitting of the National Assembly.

Yet, while these legislative amendments impose stiffer fines and stricter penalties for dangerous driving, the nation is still left without answers in the tragic December 11, 2024, accident that claimed Dr. Williams’ life. No arrests. No charges. No closure.

The Inconsistency: Stiffer Penalties, Yet No Justice?

The amendments to the Vehicles and Road Traffic Act have increased penalties significantly:

  • Reckless and dangerous driving fines: Raised from $4,000 to between $6,000 and $8,000, with repeat offenders facing up to $20,000.
  • Driving under the influence: First-time offenders now face fines of up to $10,000, while repeat offenders could be fined up to $20,000 and serve extended jail time.
  • Causing death by dangerous driving: Maximum penalty increased to 10 years imprisonment.
  • Causing death by careless driving: Maximum penalty increased to six years imprisonment.

These amendments come in response to a deadly 2024, where 13 lives were lost on the nation’s roads, including five fatalities in the December 11 crash.

However, as the nation watches in disbelief, the driver in Dr. Williams’ case remains unidentified and unpunished.

The Mystery of Dr. Williams’ Death

Initial police statements confirmed that the driver involved had been identified and was assisting with investigations. But months later, no arrest has been made, and no charges have been filed.

This glaring lack of accountability has outraged citizens, especially as Dr. Williams was laid to rest this past week with justice nowhere in sight.

As PM Drew champions stricter penalties for motorists, the question on everyone’s mind remains: Where is the accountability for Dr. Williams’ tragic death?

New Technology, Anonymous Reporting—But What About Transparency?

Alongside the new fines and penalties, the government has announced the use of technology to enforce traffic laws, including:

  • Automated ticketing systems via traffic cameras.
  • A public reporting system allowing citizens to anonymously submit dashcam footage of reckless driving.
  • Monetary rewards of up to $5,000 for evidence leading to convictions.
  • Duty-free concessions on dashboard cameras to encourage safer driving.

But while these measures aim to hold reckless drivers accountable, the glaring absence of action in the Dr. Williams case has left the public demanding answers.

A Call for Transparency and Justice

As PM Drew and his administration tout their commitment to road safety, critics argue that the government’s credibility is on the line.

Stricter laws may deter future offenses, but what about past injustices?

Will the Drew administration finally address the mystery surrounding Dr. Simoneth Williams’ death? Or will the driver remain free while the nation watches in silence?

Only time will tell. The people are watching. The people demand justice.
