Taiwan President MA meets with Caribbean Counterparts

Cahal Pech Room, Radisson Fort George Hotel, Belize, (Wednesday, March 16th, 2016 ) – Prime Minister of St.Kitts-Nevis Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris joined his counterparts from St.Lucia Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony, St.Vincent and Grenadines Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves , Belize President Dean Barrow and Taiwan’s President Ma Ying-jeou for a round-table discussion  in Belize on Wednesday. The Caribbean Leaders all  used the opportunity to express hope that President Ma’s successor will continue to push bilateral relations with their countries.

During the round-table discussions Prime Minister Harris lauded the solid and sustainable relations between Taiwan and St.Kitts-Nevis and also commended President Ma on his stewardship as President of Taiwan

“We look forward to witnessing the inauguration of the first woman president,” the Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis told President Ma Ying-jeou, adding that, “you must take some credit for creating an environment in which all women are encouraged.”

Taiwan elected its first female president, president-elect Tsai Ing-wen, on January 16th.  During the  meeting with President Ma Ying-jeou Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris and Minister of Agriculture, Honourable Eugene Hamilton both made a commitment to attend the inauguration in May.

Prime Minister Gonsalves voiced hope that the prosperous relations between Taiwan and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines will continue. He also praised Ma for helping improve people’s livelihoods in the two countries, adding his hope that Tsai will continue to push bilateral ties forward.

Earlier that day, Ma attended a luncheon held in his honor by Belizean Governor-General Sir Colville Young.

Ma expressed gratitude for Belize’s staunch support for Taiwan’s bid to participate in international organizations.

After concluding his visit to Belize on Thursday, Ma will return home, making a transit stop in Los Angeles and arriving in Taiwan on Saturday.
