Visit by President of Venezuela, Nicholas Maduro, to Dominica and St.Kitts is off.
Basseterre, St.Kitts (September 18th 2015):- The media was alerted on Friday afternoon that the visit was no longer taking place. No reasons were given for the cancellation.
Maduro was expected on St.Kitts on Friday evening where he was scheduled to participate in a number of events including a gala affair at the Marriott Hotel as well as the Independence Ceremonial Parade on Independence Day Saturday 19th September. St.Kitts-Nevis Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris informed the nation that Moduro was also expected symbolically handover a number of cheques to former Sugar Workers who were given a $16 million EC payout as monies owed to them as a result of years worked in the industry. The Money was provided as a grant by the Venezuelan Government.
President Maduro was also scheduled to travel to Dominica where he was scheduled to symbolically hand over 300 ‘petrocasas’ (Houses) donated to Dominica by his government following the passage of Tropical Storm Erika.
According to reports out of Dominica All of Friday ferverish activities were taking place at the Douglas Charles Airport there in anticipation of Maduro’s visit, including the construction of one of the ‘petrocasas.’ Additionally government officials from Venezuela were already in Dominica finalizing plans for the visit and the handing over ceremony.
It is not known whether Maduro will visit the islands in the future. It has been reported however that the Vice President of Venezuela has in fact made the trip to St.Kitts and is expected to move on to Dominica in place of El Presidente Maduro
