BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, January 28, 2018 (PLP PR Media Inc.) — The first Peoples Labour Party (PLP)/Prime Minister’s (PM) Monthly Health Walk for the year took place on Saturday January 27 with a large turn up of highly energised walkers who brushed off a threatening shower at the start. As usual it attracted participants from all parts of the island.
The early morning walk that has become a staple for health conscious citizens and residents of St. Kitts took the participants along the well-known Belle Vue to Ottley’s route, after short hiatus when it took part in other constituencies last year. After a call to order by PLP National Chairman Mr Warren Thompson, and a word of prayer by PLP’s Women’s Arm Representative Mrs Sonia Henry, the participants took off at 5:55 am.
Receiving an award from Prime Minister and National Political Leader of the Peoples Labour Party Dr the Hon Timothy Harris at the finish point at the Ottley’s hard courts for the top position finish was a participant from Newton Ground in Constituency Number Six.
The next two positions were taken by participants from Sandy Point in Constituency Number Five, and were presented with their awards by the Deputy National Political Leader of the People’s Labour Party, Senator the Hon Akilah Byron-Nisbett. Taking the prize for fourth position was a walker from Constituency Number Seven, Mr Adned Patrick.
While Constituency Number Seven, which is represented in the Federal Parliament by Prime Minister Harris, had produced the bulk of participants, one of their own Mr Vince Matthew had set off at a blistering pace but faded out early in the walk and another walker also from Constituency Number Seven, Mr Adned Patrick, led all the way but towards the end was overtaken by the three walkers from outside the constituency.
Finishing in the top position was Mr Selwyn ‘Zemenfes’ Caines of Newton Ground, closely followed by the shoe-carrying ten-year-old Master Edward Williams of Sandy Point and Mr Keithly Lewis also of Sandy Point. It was observed that Master Williams, even though he carried his shoes instead of wearing them most of the way, appeared energetic enough to overtake the top finisher but he restrained himself from doing so, probably respecting his age.
Many usual participants from outside Constituency Number Seven who always join the Prime Minister in his crusade of promoting healthy lifestyles through regular exercises were present. However a new entrant in Dr Emanoel Bastos a medical doctor who is a resident of Conaree brought an affirmative message that underscored the importance of what the Prime Minister has been preaching through practical means.
“This is my first time on the trail for the walk and I expect that I will be a regular participant that every month I come here,” said Dr Bastos at the end of the walk. “This is an incentive I think for everybody who tries the first time to have an incentive in the other days of the month to actually do it by themselves so they improve their health and live longer and better lives.”
At the end of the walk at the Ottley’s hard courts, all participants were treated to a healthy breakfast, after which PLP’s National Secretary Ms Myrtilla Williams thanked all for showing a great support for the first PLP/Prime Minister’s Health Walk of the year and announced that prizes would be given to the four top finishers.
While also thanking the participants for joining him for the walk, Prime Minister Dr the Hon Timothy Harris advised that the next health walk would be held on the last Saturday of February and encouraged all to bring a friend or two for the walk. The route for the next would walk, said the Prime Minister, would be given at a later date after the PLP National Committee would have met and made a decision.
The PLP/Prime Minister’s Monthly Health Walk has been around since April 2007 when it was launched as the Constituency Number Seven Dr Harris Health Walk. With the 2013 founding of the Peoples Labour Party (PLP), which is one of the three parties in the ruling Team Unity Administration, its National Committee has taken an active role in promoting the walk.
Other national and branch officials of the Peoples Labour Party who were present for the walk on Saturday January 27 included Mr Alexis Nesbitt the National Party Organiser, Mr Manasses Huggins one of the two PLP Youth Arm Representatives, Mr Heston Hamm one of the two National Party Trustees, and one of the PLP Founder Members Mr Williams Phillip. From the branches were Chairmen Mr Cante Bowry (#1), Mr Glenville Mills (#5), Mr Kevin Williams (#6), Mr Lenworth Harris (#7), and Mr Wendell Wattley (#8).
