Basseterre, St.Kitts (Novemebr 30th 2016):- It was an amazing exercise staged in downtown Basseterre on Wednesday 30th November 2016 when the Minister of Agriculture, Health, National Health Insurance, Human Settlement, Community Development, Gender Affairs, Social Services, Cooperatives and  Lands  the Hon. Eugene Hamilton led a procession organized by the the St. Kitts Nevis Association of Persons with Disabilities (SKNAPD) as part of their Week of Activities ahead of the International Day of People with Disability celebrated on December 3^rd.

Led by Hon. Hamilton the walk began at the Ferry Terminal at 9am, and made its way along the Bay Road, up Fort Street, across Cayon Street, culminating at Government Headquarters on Church Street.

 

“It was very effective in raising public awareness as regards the challenges faced by persons with disabilities as they seek to live their lives with some degree of normality/normalcy. This includes having access to the facilities and amenities available to the public such as streets, sidewalks, buildings and community services,” said Chesil Hamilton who photographed theprocession.

In a social media post Minister of Health Hon. Hamiltom stated “I had the honor and the memorable experience of walking blind folded through the streets of Basseterre in an exercise called “Walk in my shoes” organised by the St. Kitts Nevis Association of Persons with Disabilities (SKNAPD) as part of their week of activities. The activity was indeed an eye-opener . The experience further enhanced my resolve to heighten my Ministries support for Persons with Disabilities in our community . The challenges faced by Persons with disabilities are tremendous and my Ministry and this Team UNITY administration will continue to do all that we can and more to support this community of persons.”

 

Opposition MP  Konris Maynard joined in solidarity as did Calypso Legend King Socrates along with other well wishers.
