TAIWAN GOVERNMENT THANKS PRIME MINISTER HARRIS FOR HIS CALL FOR PEACE IN THE TAIWAN STRAIT
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, October 05, 2021 (Press Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister) – The Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan), through its embassy in Basseterre, has extended its profound gratitude to Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris for his call to the United Nations and the wider international community to “do everything to preserve peace in the Taiwan Strait.”
Tensions between Taiwan and mainland China intensified in recent days after Chinese warplanes reportedly carried out a number of operations in Taiwan’s air defense identification zone – actions the Taiwanese Government has condemned as irresponsible and provocative.
Utilizing his social media platform, Prime Minister Harris called for a de-escalation of the situation, noting that, “A peaceful world without military aggression benefits the entire world and allows us to focus on the prosperity agenda for all countries and people.”
“Peace is a precondition for global stability and prosperity. Together we can create a better world,” said Prime Minister Harris, who recently called for Taiwan’s full inclusion in the international community in his presentation at the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly held in September.
In extending profound gratitude to Dr. Harris, the Taiwan Embassy stated, “The country will keep striving to safeguard its cherished values and democratic ideals and promote peaceful development and prosperity in the region and globally. In the meantime, we deeply appreciate the solidarity and support of allies such as St. Kitts and Nevis and thank them for choosing to stand with Taiwan.”
