ST.MAARTEN TO HOST LIBA LEEWARD ISLANDS BASKETBALL TOURNEY IN DECEMBER
Fresh off a hugely successful Battle of the Fittest Invitational Tournament over the summer St.Maarten is getting set once again to host another regional Basketball Tournament. This time it’s the Leeward Islands Basketball Association LIBA Tournament . The tournament is organized by the Leeward Islands Basketball Association which was revived some 3 years ago after almost a decade of dormancy. The LIBA Tournament was a staple on the OECS Calendar during the 80’s and 90’s and was regarded as the most exciting sub regional basketball tournament of it’s kind.
In a letter sent to the various association General Secretary of the St.Maarten Association Kieth Hanson confirmed his organizations commitment to host the tournament which is scheduled for December 11th to 17th. The tournament is expected to feature teams from Antigua, BVI, Anguilla, Monsterrat, St.Kitts, Nevis and hosts St.Maarten .
Monsterrat are the reigning Champions having won the tournament in controversial fashion in 2014 when they beat the BVI and Antigua and St.Kitts were both disqualified in the second semi-final game thus clearing the way for Monsterrat to emerge Champions and win their first LIBA Tournament. Antigua, BVI and St.Kitts have won the tournament at various times over the 30 year history of the event. The first LIBA Tourney was held I St.Kitts in 1984 and won by Antigua.
