St.Kitts-Nevis Ministry of Education Denounces Social Media Prank

(EMU) – St. Kitts, February 21, 2017Officials in the Ministry of Education learned this morning that an unofficial message indicating the closure of school today Tuesday 21 February has been circulated via social and other media.

The ministry has expressed displeasure with the dissemination of such inaccurate information by unauthorised individuals. It emphasized that such actions will not be tolerated as they can cause significant inconvenience and uncertainty for parents as well as delay and disruption in the school day.

A spokesperson from the ministry stated, “The decision to temporarily close schools is not taken lightly. It is made with the well-being and safety of our children and the concerns of parents in mind.”  She added that the MET Office is consulted before an announcement is made with regard to the closure of schools due to inclement weather. “In this case the MET Office has assured the Ministry that the present weather does not warrant the closure of school.”

The ministry has noted disappointment in the decision of the individual who would have circulated this inaccurate information and has urged that individuals be more responsible.

Earlier today the general public was asked via Public Service Announcement to disregard the information sent out. Additionally, the ministry is seeking to guide the public in relation to its policy on the closure of schools.

Parents and guardians are therefore encouraged to listen to official media houses regarding the operations of schools and if necessary confirm with Ministry of Education Administrators where possible.
