St.Kitts Dominates Leeward Islands Basketball Championship to Win First LIBA Title in 15 years
Team St.Kitts under the guidance of Basketball legend Coach Glen “Ghost” Phillip completed what is being described as one of the most dominating performances by a Team at the Annual Leeaward Islands Basketball Association LIBA Senior Mens Championship.
Team St.Kitts dominated every single opponent by winning every game by double digits including a near 20 point trouncing in what turned out to be a lopsided final game against the BVI.
Team St.Kitts maintained their tournament dominance with a comprehensive 73-57 victory over the BVI.
A first half lead of some 14 points coupled with a 4th Quarter 10-0 run was more than enough for St.Kitts to comfortably cruise and easily dispose of the BVI to take the coveted Championship
Team St.Kitts Captain and Tournament MVP Nashorn Maynard had another impressive outing with 23 pts and 20 rebs. He was well supported by his brother Naren who had 17 pts and 16 rebs. Guard Taslyn Hodge supported well with 13 pts and 6 assists.
Nashorn was easily the Most Valuable Player in the Tournament averaging over 25 pts and 15 rebs per game.
The LIBA Championship Title is the first for a St.Kitts Team since 2001. Incidentally the 2001 Championship team was then led by Team Captain and now Head Coach Glen Ghost Phillip. Team Manager , Selector and SKNABA Secretary-General Wallis Wilkin said that the victory was a culmination of hard work by the Coach and players .
“This victory could not come at a better time for Basketball in the federation. We needed this victory for the sport and it’s development. The players got together as part of a larger squad just 2-3 months ago and they bought in to the Coaching style and approach of Ghost Phillip and they worked hard and practices hard and it paid off in an impressive fashion,” said Team Manager Wallis Wilkin.
The trip to Anguilla as Head Coach was of sentimental significance for Glenn Phillip who some 27 years earlier participated in his first LIBA Tournament in Anguilla and as a result gained a Basketball Scholarship to Qunnipiac University in Connecticut and thus becoming the first St.Kitts –Nevis National to receive a Basketball Scholarship from a US College.
Congratulations to the entire Contingent including players , Management and Coaching Staff of Team St.Kitts .
