St. Kitts and Nevis Launches Campaign for Seat on UN Economic and Social Council

New York, April 7, 2025 – St. Kitts and Nevis has formally launched its candidacy for a seat on the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), one of the six principal organs of the UN responsible for coordinating global efforts on economic, social, humanitarian, and cultural issues.

In a letter submitted by the Permanent Mission of St. Kitts and Nevis to the United Nations, the Federation outlined its commitment to sustainable development and international cooperation. The campaign is anchored on the theme “Sustainability, Resilience, Security,” reflecting the nation’s long-term vision to become the Caribbean’s leading Sustainable Island State by 2040.
According to the correspondence, “the Federation’s transformative vision has placed it at the vanguard of resilience and sustainability among small island states.” The document emphasizes the importance of global partnerships and a supportive international environment to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Her Excellency Dr. Mutryce Williams, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, stated that the campaign is driven by a strong development agenda. “Our mission at the UN is shaped by our national priorities, and the upcoming Global Sustainable Islands Summit in May further highlights our commitment to the principles of sustainable development and just transition,” she said.

If elected to ECOSOC, St. Kitts and Nevis intends to champion critical global issues such as climate action, biodiversity protection, environmental justice, and economic equity — all of which remain vital for the country, particularly as the hurricane season approaches.
Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew noted that the Federation’s candidacy “reflects an action-oriented agenda that leverages St. Kitts and Nevis’ voice as a force for good on the global stage.” He emphasized the importance of building win-win partnerships to secure the nation’s future and empower citizens.
Foreign Minister, the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas, also praised the efforts of the foreign service, stating that the nation’s diplomatic posture aims to enhance visibility, deepen partnerships, and lead with purpose across multilateral institutions.
The election to determine new ECOSOC members will take place on June 4, 2025, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The government has commended Dr. Williams, Minister Counselor Eustace T. Wallace, and the rest of the UN Mission team for their dedication, strategic foresight, and execution of the Federation’s foreign policy objectives.
As the campaign unfolds, St. Kitts and Nevis continues to position itself as a proactive voice for sustainable development, particularly on behalf of small island developing states facing shared global challenges.
