Akila Byron-Nisbett as the Deputy Leader of the Peoples Labour Party PLP and becoming the first Woman and Youth to hold such a significant Leadership post in a major political party highlights the emphasis and focus being placed on youth and women development by the PLP-Peoples Labour Party .
In the lead up to the Party’s Convention held last weekend hundreds of young people signed up as official members of the 4 year Old Poltical Organisation. This was certainly a very welcomed development by the Party leadership as young people in the federation are often reluctant to be involved at such a level in politics. The surge of youth membership in the PLP suggests that the notion that young people may be reluctant to participate and help to direct the political landscape might be misguided and instead it might be a situation where the traditional longstanding parties have not appealed to the the modern youth . The emergence of the PLP as a new and vibrant party provides an appealing alternative for the youths to the traditional parties that have become engrained in our culture. Thus making PLP , with it’s dynamic leadership and as the new kid on the block, very attractive to young people .
Senator Byron-Nisbet election as PLP Deputy Leader as a woman and a young person provides her with an unprecedented opportunity to influence the political directorate in a manner that enhances the development of women and youth in the federation .
Senator Byron-Nisbet is part of what has been described by political observers as well as PARTY Leader Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris as one of the most formidable, diverse, sound and vibrant party executives ever elected in the history of the federation.
Prime Minister Dr Harris, believes the party now boasts a competent executive team that is ready to serve the people and communities of St. Kitts-Nevis. Prime Minister Harris stated that a number of constitutional amendments or enhancements were made to ensure the party is kept abreast and ahead of any and all political eventualities.
Prime Minister Harris told the massive audience in attendance at the PLP inaugural convention “We have strengthened the office of the Party Executive to provide for a broader range of skills, talent, knowledge and expertise so as to guide, direct, advise and organise the Party.
For example, every functioning Party needs a Party Organiser, that was not provided for under the old Constitution. Similarly, there was no formal provision for deputies. This is essential for the good functioning of the party as well as for the purposes of continuity and this has now been provided for. This means that when the substantive officer needs to absent themselves, things do not grind to a halt.
Modern parties like every other entity needs legal advice from time to time and we have therefore provided for someone of that background to serve on our executive. This will provide cost savings as normally one would have to go for external advice at market prices.
We have also provided for a Communications Director to devise and coordinate our communication strategies at strategic and tactical levels. This person will be ably assisted by our National spokesperson who will play an active part in communicating to both our members as well as external audiences.
We have provided for three (3) Trustees who will be responsible for holding and maintaining the interests of the Party. They will be part of the decision making process for maintaining the well-being of the Party, and will have an enhanced standing.
So, you will see that the Party is working in harmony with the values, and aspirations of Team Unity by setting its house in order to create a better framework of governance and transparency for the best interests of the people of the Country. ”
