Basseterre, St. Kitts, October 04, 2018 (SKNIS): The Team Unity Administration in collaboration with the National Housing Cooperation (NHC) continues to provide residents and citizens with affordable housing solutions and programmes geared towards improving the standard of living for all.
While speaking at his press conference on October 04, Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris lauded the Team Unity Housing Solutions Programmes that are being currently rolled out.
“In sum, our housing solutions have benefited 2615 families. An amazing, historic feat never before accomplished in history of St Kitts and Nevis from the era of slum clearance to modern times,” said Prime Minister Harris, while giving an account of the numerous achievements the housing sector has seen over the past three years.
He said that in three years, 223 homes have been delivered, 450 families were assisted to the tune of $10,000 in repairs and construction of bathrooms through the HELP programme, 413 persons have been assisted through the First Time Homeowners Programme, 62 civil servants have been approved under the government employee mortgage financing (GEM) programme and 1432 applicants have been provided with assistance from the widely acclaimed Hurricane Rehabilitation Programme.
Prime Minister Harris made clear that under the First Time Homeowners programme no Minister of Government has benefited under the programme during the tenure of the current administration.
“We bade good bye and good riddance to the bad practices of the former regime that allowed a senator to be preferred in the programme,” he said.
He mentioned that more homes are expected to be delivered in East Basseterre later this month and highlighted that the construction of 35 more units has started.
“Never have so many families benefited by government initiatives in so short a period of time,” he said and added that these initiatives “reflects our fair share philosophy being applied everywhere on the basis of established and equitable criteria.”
