Outrage Grows Over Political Bias as Government Yet to Issue Condolences on Passing of Former Minister Roy Jones
Political Bias Allegations Spark Outrage Over Lack of Tribute for Former Minister Roy Jones
Concerns are mounting following the passing of the Honourable Roy Jones, former Minister of Trade and Commerce, over what some have called a “sickening political bias” in the treatment of his death by the current Labour government. Critics argue that the lack of official recognition and tribute for Jones, who served two terms in government and made significant contributions to his constituency, highlights a concerning disparity in how political figures are honored based on their party affiliation.
Jones, who won his seat in Constituency #7 in both 1984 and 1989, was widely respected for his humility and dedication to his community. Notably, he donated half of his monthly salary back to his constituents, a testament to his commitment to public service. Despite these accomplishments, no official statement or tribute was issued by the government following his death, sparking criticism from members of the public and political observers.
This has been compared to the extensive recognition given to the late Glen “Ghost” Phillip, a former government minister, when he passed away. For Phillip, a special parliamentary sitting was held exclusively to pay tribute, and flags on government buildings were flown at half-mast. His body was also made to lie in-state at Government Headquarters, and multiple statements of condolence were issued by the government, a gesture which was appropriate and that was deeply appreciated by many.
In contrast, the absence of similar gestures for Jones has left many questioning the fairness of such practices. Critics argue that while Phillip’s send-off was deserved and honorable, the same level of respect should be extended to all former ministers, regardless of party affiliation.
Jones’ supporters and those who knew him emphasize that his contributions to the nation, particularly in its early post-independence years, laid the groundwork for much of the country’s progress. They argue that such a legacy deserves recognition, and that failing to honor him in the same way as others is a disservice to his memory and contributions.
The government’s silence on the matter has led to further calls for an end to perceived political favoritism, with some warning that future administrations may follow this example, potentially disregarding key figures based on party lines. Many are urging for fair and equal treatment when it comes to honoring those who served the nation, regardless of political allegiance.
While the government has yet to formally respond to the concerns raised, the issue continues to spark debate across the nation, with many calling for a more inclusive and respectful approach to recognizing the service of all political leaders.
Roy Jones passed away in Florida on September 13th, 2024.
