The St.Kitts-Nevis Opposition Labour/NRP Coalition organized and hosted a Townhall Meeting for former Sugar Workers at the St. Pauls Community Centre. The highly publicsized meeting attracted about 30 persons mainly supporters of the Main Opposition coalition.
Leader of the Opposition and former Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas addressed the relatively small gathering along with Chairman of the SKN Labour Party Hon. Marcella Liburd and West Basseterret Representative Hon. Konris Maynard. Also present were unsuccessful Labour Candidate Dr. Terrance Drew, Former Deputy Prime Minister Dr Asim Martin and Senator Nigel Carty.

The Opposition received heavy criticism regarding the staging of the Townhall as many saw it as hugely political and had very little to do with a genuine concern for the former sugar workers.
“The Dr. Denzil Douglas led regime while in government never met with these former sugar workers. He said to the world that his government owed them nothing. So it is quite interesting that now in Opposition he is seeking an audience with them. It is of little surprise that he was largely ignored last evening as was shown by the relatively small turnout for what was essentially a Douglas townhall meeting in St.Pauls ,” said a Caller to Local Talk show on Thursday .
