Millions Invested to Save St. Kitts’ Sports Facilities After Last 2 Years of Shocking Neglect!

In a desperate move to restore St. Kitts’ standing as a hub for international sporting events and local athlete development, the Ministry of Sports has allocated millions of dollars to overhaul the island’s premier cricket and track and field facilities, which had fallen into disrepair due to the last two years of gross neglect and poor maintenance.

Kim Collins Athletic Stadium Revamp

The Kim Collins Athletic Stadium is undergoing a comprehensive $1.9 million upgrade, tackling long-overdue issues:

  • Electrical and plumbing systems have been completely replaced.
  • The steel frame was repainted to prevent further corrosion.
  • Cracked drywall was replaced with durable concrete.
  • New spectator seating was installed to improve comfort and safety.

Additionally, the stadium’s track, critical for international meets and local training, is being replaced at a staggering $3.8 million, excluding preparatory civil works for installation.

Warner Park Cricket Stadium Upgrades

At the Warner Park Cricket Stadium, outdated facilities received a much-needed boost:

  • Lighting systems were upgraded to meet international standards.
  • A brand-new jumbotron was procured for over $730,000, replacing obsolete technology that the previous administration failed to address despite warnings.

What’s Missing?

While the investments mark a significant step forward, Minister Duggins faced criticism for not outlining plans for a robust maintenance program, raising concerns about the facilities’ long-term upkeep. However, he assured that the government remains committed to improving sports infrastructure nationwide to provide safe and modern venues for athletes and communities alike.

A New Era for Sports in St. Kitts

This ambitious revitalization project signals the government’s resolve to position St. Kitts and Nevis as a top destination for international events while nurturing local talent. Only time will tell if these investments will stand the test of time—or if history will repeat itself.
