Costco’s Commitment to DEI and Wage Increases Garners Support from Black Activists

In a significant move, Costco has announced plans to raise hourly wages for its top-tier employees to over $30 an hour, with the first increase to $30.20 scheduled for March 2025. This decision comes amid ongoing contract negotiations with the Teamsters union, which represents approximately 18,000 Costco workers. The union had previously threatened a strike over demands for better wages and benefits.

Concurrently, Costco has maintained its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, even as other major corporations have scaled back such programs. This steadfast dedication has resonated with Black activists and community leaders. Notably, Reverend Al Sharpton led a “buy-in” at an East Harlem Costco, accompanied by over 100 supporters from the National Action Network. The event was designed to show solidarity with Costco’s DEI efforts, especially in light of recent political challenges to such initiatives.

Reverend Sharpton emphasized the importance of supporting companies that uphold inclusive practices, stating, “We will stand with those who stand with us.” He also highlighted the need to back corporations that demonstrate a genuine commitment to justice and inclusion.

Costco’s recent actions have positioned it as a symbol of corporate responsibility and inclusivity, garnering praise from various community leaders and activists.
