BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, March 27, 2019 (PLP PR Media Inc.) — Leader of Team Unity, and Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr the Hon Timothy Harris has paid a glowing tribute to his Cabinet colleagues Deputy Prime Minister the Hon Shawn Richards and the Hon Eugene Hamilton for the role they played in the formation of the Team Unity Movement.
Addressing a large turnout at a Team Unity Community Consultation held at the Sandy Point Community Centre under the theme ‘TEAM UNITY: Making Dreams a Reality in Every Community!!!’ on Tuesday March 26, Prime Minister Harris said that the two have a special place in his heart because when social commentators recognised what the country needed way before 2015, they contacted him.
“It was he (Hon Richards) as the Leader of the People’s Action Movement (PAM) party and the Hon Eugene Hamilton, my political neighbour, who journeyed to Tabernacle to have conversation with me about the formation of the Team Unity Movement, and how we should work together to create a better St. Kitts and Nevis,” said Dr Harris.
Prime Minister Harris who lives in Tabernacle Village is the Area Parliamentary Representative for St. Christopher Seven, while Hon Hamilton is the Area Parliamentary Representative for St. Christopher Eight. The Hon Shawn Richards is the Area Parliamentary Representative for St. Christopher Five.
“Four years after, it is a wonderful feeling to see what we have succeeded in doing on behalf of the people,” said Prime Minister Harris, who is also the National Political Leader of the Peoples Labour Party (PLP), one of the three parties in the Ruling Team Administration. The People’s Action Movement (PAM) and the Nevis-based Concerned Citizens Movement (CCM) are the other two parties.
“So Shawn Richards and Eugene Hamilton will always have a special place in my heart and special consideration because they took the courageous step that the country, at the level of the ordinary man in the street had long determined that the good governance of St. Kitts and Nevis required a new approach to governance in the country, and way in which government was doing its work.”
Prime Minister Harris commended the Leader of PAM and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Youth, Sports and Culture, the Hon Shawn Richards for the high quality representation that he has brought to the people of St. Christopher Number Five.
He equally thanked all the people of the constituency who have held Hon Richards up and given him support by among others providing constructive criticism as those things are important in the enhancement of the quality of representation on behalf of the people.
Dr Harris told the audience that he felt satisfied when the Hon Richards said that the last four years had been better than anything that happened twenty years before. He noted that it was a remarkably powerful statement of truth, as he had listened to the Hon Eugene Hamilton at the town hall meeting in Cayon enumerating a list of wonderful things that were happening for the people of Cayon in housing, in sports development, and in infrastructure development among others.
“As if to prove the point no sooner had we had that conversation in Cayon Community Centre two days after we were having the launch of Phase Two of the Road Resurfacing Programme, just a stone throw away from his house,” said the Prime Minister. “32 miles of road to complete the ten miles thereabouts that we have already started as part of the most comprehensive road resurfacing programme ever to be executed in St. Kitts in the last twenty-six years”
Deputy Prime Minister, and Area Parliamentary Representative, the Hon Shawn Richards also addressed the town hall meeting. Cabinet Ministers present included the Hon Eugene Hamilton, the Hon Ian Patches Liburd, the Hon Vincent Byron and the Hon Wendy Phipps. Also present were the Deputy Speaker Senator the Hon Akilah Byron-Nisbett, Ambassador His Excellency Michael Powell, and Permanent Secretary for Education Mr William Vincent Hodge.
The next Team Unity Administration’s Community Consultation will be held in St. Christopher One (East Basseterre) at the New Town Community Centre on Tuesday April 2.
