BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, March 24, 2019 (PLP PR Media Inc.) — National Political Leader of the Peoples Labour Party (PLP), and Prime Minister, Dr the Hon Timothy Harris has told the people of St. Christopher Three (West Basseterre) that Senator the Hon Akilah Byron-Nisbett represents the future and will be like a breath of fresh air with a passion to deliver and change, and will lead the constituency by example.  

The Hon Byron-Nisbett who is the Deputy National Political Leader of the Peoples Labour Party, one of the three parties in the ruling Team Unity Administration, is Team Unity’s Caretaker for St. Christopher Three. She is also the Chairperson of the PLP Constituency Number Three Executive Branch.

“This is an historic occasion in the socio-political life of West Basseterre,” said Prime Minister Harris on Saturday March 23 as he delivered feature remarks at the opening ceremony of the PLP Constituency Number Three office at the CMR Building in the Lime Kiln Industrial Park. “For the first time in history, since adult suffrage in 1952, a young lady is bold and courageous enough to come forward to offer herself in service to the people of West Basseterre.”

Like Ms Mary Charles and Ambassador Constance Mitchum before her, Akilah Byron-Nisbett had come forward knowing that the hustle and tussle of politics can be rough and tough, said the Prime Minister. He added that it was a job for one who is committed to put their hand to the plough and never look back but press forward knowing they are there to benefit the people and to help them.

Prime Minister Harris told the gathering that one of the things Team Unity Movement had promised was that it will create a new history – a history of which people can be proud, and a history that will create the legacy for a better St. Kitts and Nevis. He noted that Mrs Akilah Byron-Nisbett, who is trained in ICT, sacrificed a career path with the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank for greater service to the people of the country in the position of Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, and is now offering herself for greater service to the good people of West Basseterre and the country at large.

“In advance I thank all the people – the people of the Village community, the people of LaGuerite, Lime Kiln, Shadwell, Camps, Mattingley, Boyd’s, West Farm, Trinity, Palmetto Point, indeed every nook and cranny, every street of the communities comprising the geographical district of West Basseterre,” said the Honourable Prime Minister.

He added: “Your season of bountiful harvest will be long and prolonged when you elect Senator Akilah Byron-Nisbett as your next parliamentary representative. Akilah represents the future. Her tenure can be long and effective and positive with your help and with your support.”

According to the Honourable Prime Minister, the opening of the office represents Senator Byron-Nisbett’s signature and the partnership agreement established between her and the people St. Christopher Three. He observed that the office will be opened all the time (9:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday to Friday) and not just in the campaign season, since for her the relationship must be an enduring one.

“Today’s office opening is a critical milestone in her journey of service on behalf of the people and this journey will climax and take on a new meaning and substance with her election as the first female representative in the parliament in fulltime service to the people of West Basseterre,” commented Prime Minister Harris.

Present at the opening ceremony included Senior Minister and Minister of Nevis Affairs, Labour, Social Security, and Ecclesiastical Affairs the Hon Vance Amory, and Mrs Vernie Amory; Minister of Agriculture, Health et al, the Hon Eugene Hamilton; first Prime Minister and only living National Hero, the Right Hon and Right Excellent Dr Sir Kennedy Simmonds, and Lady Mary Simmonds; Ambassadors Constance Mitchum, and Sydney Osborne.  

Prime Minister Harris noted that Ambassador Constance Mitchum was the first woman in the political history of modern St. Kitts and Nevis, to enter politics and win a seat and repeat the feat. Dr Harris said: “She is to date the most successful woman politician in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis. And so we are especially delighted and we hope that your experience and charm and success and experience you will share with Senator Akilah Byron-Nisbett.”
