BASSETERRE (14th April, 2017): Minister of Tourism The Hon. Lindsay F.P. Grant led a notable group of stakeholders and partners of the Tourism Industry, onboard the Mein Schiff 5, to give a thrilling Kittitian welcome on the ship’s inaugural visit to the destination.

The Mein Schiff 5, which is owned by TUI Cruises, arrived on Wednesday for the very first time to St. Kitts, with a maximum capacity of 2,534 passengers. The Mein Schiff 5 uses highly innovative technology for environmentally-friendly ship operations. It was explained that each ship in this series consumes 30 percent less energy in comparison with vessels of similar size.

Minister Grant said he was delighted to personally welcome the Captain, crew and passengers to St. Kitts. He invited them to explore the destination by taking an island tour, going on an adventurous excursion such as ziplining through the lush rainforest or simply relaxing at one of the pristine beaches.

“St. Kitts has so many exciting activities to offer our guests, that I have no doubt that your passengers will leave our shores happier than when they arrived,” Minister Grant told the Captain of the Mein Schiff 5. “Particularly since our people are known for their genuine Kittitian hospitality. From the Knowledgeable taxi operator; to our bright-eyed children on their way to school; our generous and caring attendants at the restaurants and shops. Our people are indeed naturally helpful and eager to offer only the best of our island paradise.”

Also present at the plaque-exchange ceremony were officials from the Ministry of Tourism, St. Kitts Tourism Authority, St. Christopher Air and Sea Port Authority, Customs Department, the Police High Command, the media and the ship’s agents Delisle Walwyn & Company Limited.

In the last cruise season (2015-’16) cruise ships made 373 calls to St. Kitts, bringing 913,716 passengers, which was the most ever in a cruise season. The 2016-’17 cruise season is expected to be another record breaking season with more than a million passengers projected, from 391 cruise ship calls.
