Ms. Stacey Greene of St. Kitts and Nevis, who currently resides in New Jersey, is one step closer to the title of Public Speaking World Champion. Stacey took first place at the Toastmasters District 83 International Speech Contest on Sunday May 21, 2017 in Somerset, New Jersey. This well-deserved victory earns her the privilege to compete in August with 90 other semifinalists from around the world at the Toastmasters International Convention in Vancouver, Canada.
Stacey’s speech, Dance Your Dance, allowed the audience to reflect on themselves as she presented strong arguments as to why one ought to live a life that is authentic to who they are. “I was overwhelmed with emotion when I heard my name called as the winner on Sunday,” said Stacey. “I love Toastmasters and all that it stands for. This past 18 months has been one of the most challenging times of my life. This win therefore was not my win. Rather, it belongs to every individual who took the time in the last year and a half to remind me that I must dance my dance. This journey now continues for “us” as we head to the World Championship.”
This year’s Toastmasters International Speech Contest began in February with over 30,000 contestants in 142 countries. In the semifinal round, Stacey will compete against speakers from across the United States, the Caribbean, China and India just to name a few. Although other Caribbean islands such as Jamaica, Trinidad and St. Lucia have had representatives at the world championships before, this will be the first time that a national of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis will grace the world stage.
Always one to seek a challenge, Stacey pulled double duty this past weekend as she also competed on May 20th in the Evaluation Speech Contest. Contestants listen to a 7-minute “target speech” about which they know nothing (including the identity of the speaker) beforehand. They then have 5 minutes in which to prepare notes. After 5 minutes, the Sergeant-at-Arms collects the notes and, one at a time, the contestants come back into the room to give a 3-minute evaluation. They have the option of using their notes which are handed back to them when it is their turn. This contest is the final level following four rounds of competition. Stacey won the first place and now claims the title of District 83 Evaluation Speech Champion.
