The Community of Bath Estate in Dominica was evacuated today when the rains came down again, two days after the weather system dumped several inches of rain across the country, resulting in 20 deaths and widespread damage to infrastructure .
Residents were asked to leave, after concerns were raised about the possibility of further flooding in the area.
Two brothers from Bath Estate were swept away by raging waters on Thursday morning and are still missing.
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit toured the area today, following a special Cabinet meeting, which included all 21 elected members of parliament from both the governing Dominica Labour Party (DLP) and the opposition United Workers Party (UWP), to plan for the recovery and reconstruction of the country.
Skerrit was also due to visit two west coast communities – Colihaut and Coulibistrie – this afternoon, following up on his pledge in an address to the nation last night to make contact with every community and ensure that “a full account is given of every single missing person”.
A number of communities are cut off from the rest of the island as bridges have been destroyed and roads remain impassable. Residents have resorted to travelling by boat to get to their various destinations.
