Basseterre, St. Kitts – January 27, 2025
The emergency room at the JNF General Hospital buzzed with anticipation today as groundbreaking specialized training for emergency medicine professionals commenced under the leadership of Dr. Kaylah Maloney, a distinguished St. Kitts-Nevis national and U.S. board-certified Emergency Medicine specialist.

Dr. Maloney, an Assistant Professor at Rutgers University and a pioneer in emergency medicine, spearheads the transformative training program aimed at elevating healthcare standards in the Federation. With an impressive academic pedigree that includes a Doctor of Medicine (MD) from George Washington University and advanced training at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Dr. Maloney has returned home to make a significant impact.

Prime Minister and Minister of Health, Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew, expressed his gratitude at a brief opening ceremony, saying, “Dr. Maloney exemplifies the brilliance and dedication of our nationals in the Diaspora. Her willingness to contribute to the development of our healthcare system reflects the power of collaboration and national pride.”

The first phase of the training program is set to revolutionize emergency care in St. Kitts and Nevis. It covers a range of critical skills, including echocardiograms, emergency lung ultrasounds, and advanced cardiac life support. These sessions will be supplemented with Continuing Medical Education (CME) modules focusing on managing common emergency conditions, ensuring that local professionals are equipped with cutting-edge knowledge and practices.

Dr. Maloney’s expertise in ultrasound and her passion for global health and resource-limited healthcare make her uniquely suited to lead this initiative. She expressed her commitment to advancing healthcare in the Federation, stating, “Returning to St. Kitts and Nevis to contribute to the development of our emergency care systems is a privilege. I am proud to work alongside talented professionals here to enhance patient outcomes.”

This initiative is part of the Ministry of Health’s broader agenda to improve healthcare delivery, leveraging the skills of nationals abroad to address local needs. The program also highlights Dr. Maloney’s leadership in bridging global medical expertise with local healthcare innovation.

As the first phase unfolds, the Federation anticipates a ripple effect of improved emergency response capabilities, further solidifying JNF General Hospital’s role as a beacon of medical excellence in the region.
