St. Kitts-Nevis Rooted Civil Rights Lawyer Kiah Duggins Identified as Victim in DC Helicopter-Plane Crash

WICHITA, KAN. – Harvard-educated civil rights attorney Kiah Duggins, daughter of Dr. Maurice Duggins aka Maxy, a Sandy Point, St. Kitts-born and raised physician, has been identified as one of the victims of the tragic plane-helicopter collision in Washington, D.C., on January 29, 2025. The devastating crash claimed 67 lives, sending shockwaves across communities from Wichita to St. Kitts and Nevis.

Duggins, a former Miss Kansas contestant and a dedicated attorney with the Civil Rights Corps, was renowned for her work challenging unconstitutional policing and money bail practices in multiple states, including Tennessee, Texas, and Washington, D.C. Her tragic passing marks the loss of a passionate advocate for justice and a rising star in civil rights law.

“A brave and beautiful soul, a light in the fight for civil rights,” said former Sedgwick County Commissioner Lacey Cruse in a heartfelt tribute.

Her family, in a statement, expressed deep grief and requested privacy as they mourn their “beautiful and accomplished firstborn.”

Duggins’ journey from Wichita East High School to Harvard Law School was marked by excellence, advocacy, and a commitment to social justice. Her passing is a profound loss to the legal community and all who knew her.

Rest in Power, Kiah Duggins.
