Former Assistant Commissioner of Police Terrance James has officially taking up the newly created post of St.Kitts-Nevis Commissioner of Prisons and Corrections
The Minister of National Security, Prime Minister Timothy Harris recently moved to the National Assembly to change the structure and management of the facility. Out of this the position was created which among other things will oversee the overall development , expansion and improvement of the federation’s Correctional Services or Prison system. The Newly appointed Commissioner lists continuing education, changing the culture in the prison and proper screening measures as top priorities.
He told local media that he intends to boost staff development and change the policies governing entry to the prison.
The Commissioner of Corrections will be afforded the salary and privileges befitting the post of a Commissioner.
Minister of National Security Dr. Hon. Timothy Harris in a Press Conference held earlier this year stated that the restructuring of the prison services in the Federation includes the building of a new prison facility.
“A modern new facility, in keeping with international standards, is to be built with better spatial provisions for juveniles, for persons on remand, a halfway house and specific facilities for rehabilitation and programmes for reintegration into society,” Dr. Harris said.
The new prison facility will also accommodate onsite health and social services.
