National Museum Remains Closed After Two Years as $14M RLB Museum Project Stalls

Basseterre, St. Kitts – The National Museum remains shuttered nearly two years after its closure, with no visible signs of renovation or efforts to reopen at its current location in the Old Treasury Building. Meanwhile, the much-touted $14 million RLB Museum project, which was expected to provide a new museum, appears to have been either abandoned or left in limbo.

Amid the prolonged closure, museum officials have announced a relocation to a temporary office space at the National Heroes Park on the Kim Collins Highway. This interim space will allow the museum team to continue operations and assist the public with inquiries. “Feel free to stop by during our regular office hours,” officials said in a public statement.

However, concerns are mounting over the fate of the National Museum’s permanent home. The Old Treasury Building, a historic site in Basseterre, shows no visible signs of renovation or restoration, leaving the public uncertain about when, or if, the museum will reopen at its original location.

The stalled progress of the RLB Museum project further adds to the uncertainty. Once announced as a major investment in the country’s cultural and historical preservation, the project has seemingly been abandoned or placed on indefinite hold, raising questions about the government’s commitment to heritage conservation.

With no clear timeline for a permanent reopening, the National Museum’s future remains uncertain, leaving cultural enthusiasts and historians concerned about the preservation of the nation’s rich history.
