Dr. Hon. Timothy Harris Denounces Attempts to Suppress Freedom of Speech in St. Kitts and Nevis

PRESS RELEASE
Basseterre, St. Kitts (Sunday January 26th, 2025) — Former Prime Minister and Leader of the People’s Labour Party (PLP), Dr. Hon. Timothy Harris, has strongly condemned any attempts by the government or its institutions to undermine the constitutional rights of citizens to freely express their views and opinions. Dr. Harris emphasized that freedom of speech and expression, as enshrined in Section 12 of the Constitution of St. Kitts and Nevis, is a cornerstone of democracy and must be upheld at all costs.
Section 12 explicitly guarantees every citizen the right to freedom of expression, including “freedom to hold opinions without interference, freedom to receive ideas and information without interference, and freedom to communicate ideas and information without interference.” This constitutional protection underscores the right of individuals to openly question and criticize the government without fear of retaliation.
“In any democratic society, freedom of expression is non-negotiable,” Dr. Harris stated. “While we acknowledge that all freedoms come with responsibilities, it is not within the government’s purview to muzzle free speech simply because it is inconvenient or uncomfortable. The use of punitive measures and open threats against citizens is both unjustifiable and unconstitutional.”
Dr. Harris expressed grave concern over recent actions and rhetoric that appear to target citizens for exercising their fundamental rights, particularly when those views challenge the government. He noted that any attempt to intimidate or silence dissent undermines public trust and erodes the very fabric of democracy.
“Governments must understand that they serve at the will of the people and must never confuse constructive criticism with disloyalty,” he added. “The right to express dissent is not only a constitutional right but also a reflection of the vibrancy of our democracy. I stand resolutely against any form of intimidation, harassment, or suppression aimed at silencing the voices of the people.”
Dr. Harris also called on all leaders and institutions, including the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and law enforcement, to exercise fairness and impartiality in their roles. He urged them to focus on addressing critical issues, such as the rising crime rate and unsolved high-profile cases, rather than expending energy on restricting citizens’ rights to free expression.
“The people of St. Kitts and Nevis deserve leadership that respects and defends their rights, not one that seeks to suppress their voices,” Dr. Harris asserted. “The People’s Labour Party will continue to champion the rights of every citizen to speak freely and hold their leaders accountable without fear of retribution or bias.”
In closing, Dr. Harris encouraged all citizens to remain steadfast in defending their rights and freedoms. “As a nation, we must never allow anyone—whether in government or any other institution—to trample on our constitutionally enshrined freedoms. I urge all Kittitians and Nevisians to stand united in upholding the principles of democracy, justice, and fairness for all.”
