ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Murder accused Santo Yamarco Hernandez, the escaped prisoner who was shot by police in Butu Mountain, Tortola, on December 6, 2017 has died, according to reports reaching our newsroom.
Mr Hernandez, who was accused of the murder of Alston E. Penn on March 10 2017 at Windy Hill, Tortola, had been on the run since September 6, 2017 after Hurricane Irma damaged the roof and other parts of Her Majesty’s Prison at Balsam Ghut.
Police acting on information yesterday confronted the Dominican Republic national Hernandez, who was described by police as violent, and a police officer shot and wounded the fugitive.
A senior police source had revealed to us that Hernandez had a weapon in his position but it was not clear whether he attempted to use it against the police.
He was taken to Peebles Hospital under police guard but succumbed to his injury sometime last night, according to reports reaching this news site.
It is unclear if Hernandez was also of interest to the police in relation to the murder of Alston’s brother Franklin E. Penn Jr, who was gunned down on November 22, 2017 at West End, Tortola. An 11-year-old girl was also killed in that shooting.
