NIA CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (May 27, 2016) — Premier of Nevis and Minister of education Hon. Vance Amory continues to lend his support to technical vocational education and urged students to embrace the opportunities and benefits a multi-disciplinary education offers.

Mr. Amory made the comment when he delivered remarks at an opening ceremony for the Technology and Arts Exhibition of the Charlestown Secondary School (CSS) Multi-Purpose Centre at the school’s auditorium on May 26, 2016. The theme was “Creativity through Skilled Hands.” The patron was Ezzard Charles, a former teacher at the institution.

“The focus on Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET)… and the focus that we expose every child as far as possible to skilled training, is something which I fully endorse and will continue to encourage…
“You have skills. You have the talent. You have been given the opportunity and that you should take advantage…to translate that skill into an opportunity to make a living in the land of your birth,” he said.
However, Mr. Amory noted, that multi-purpose teachings should focus on the student’s future. He said, a multi-disciplinary approach to education provides an opportunity for students to develop their academic and technical skills and to make contributions to the society.
He also added that student’s interest should be broadened to embrace other areas of professional development that are offered through technical vocational education apart from the traditional areas.
The Education Minister praised Principal of the CSS Edson Elliott and Supervisor of the Multi-Purpose Centre Garfield Virgo for promoting an initiative which is helping students to realise that education is multi-faceted.
A prayer was done by Mrs. Marilyn Tross, the national anthem was delivered by Troy Jeffers, opening remarks by Mrs. Nicola Parris, remarks from Centre supervisor Mr. Garfield Virgo, Principal Mr. Edson Elliott and the vote of thinks was done by Mr. Kelvin Fraser.
