UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon Joins Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris in Caribbean Launch of the UNAIDS Lancet Commission Report : Defeating AIDS – Advancing global health
On the fringes of the 36th Meeting of CARICOM Heads of Government Prime Minister of St.Kitts-Nevis Hon. Dr. Timothy Harris joined UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon at the Caribbean launch of the UNAIDS and Lancet Commission Report: Defeating AIDS – Advancing global health on 3 July 2015 at the Hilton Hotel in Barbados.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon officially launched the report while Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis Dr. Hon Timothy Harris who is CARICOM’s Lead Head for Human Resources, Health and HIV addressed the gathering.
The global launch of the report took place in London on June 25. The Caribbean launch provides an opportunity to highlight specific recommendations of the UNAIDS and Lancet Commission that are relevant to both national and regional responses required to end the AIDS epidemic in the Caribbean.
The Commission which was established in 2013, presents compelling evidence of how the end of the AIDS epidemic as a public health threat is feasible with evidence-informed and rights-based strategies. It presents seven recommendations to do so and makes the case that the determining factor will be global collective political will.
