Written by Adlai Mudiwa
The governing body of Athletics in St. Kitts-Nevis has announced their team for the upcoming World Indoor Championships in Poland. In a release issued on Tuesday afternoon the St.Kitts-Nevis Athletic Association announced their two man team. The selections are Jason Rogers and Brijesh Lawrence. Notably absent is the World’s 4th fastest man over 60m for 2014 and the National Record Holder over the same distance , Kim Collins.
Despite having arguably the best Indoor season of any male sprinter in the World for 2014 thus far and being listed as a clear favourite to win Gold , Collins was Snubbed again by his athletic federation and left out the team for the Polish World Indoor Games.
Earlier reports in the International Media and confirmed by the SKNAAA Public Relations Officer had indicated that some consideration had been given to Collins after he declared his interest in once again representing his country at a World Games since the infamous 2012 London Olympic Games which saw Collins sent home by his Athletic Federation for spending an unauthorized night with his Wife and Coach in a London Hotel.
The 2 Times World Indoor Silver Medallist told the British Press that he has reached out to the St.Kitts-Nevis Athletic Federation and was hopeful that they would allow him to run and represent St.Kitts-Nevis at the World Indoor Event. Collins was also left off the World Championship Team last season despite a petition that drew thousands of signatures supporting his bid to run at the Worlds .
According to SKNAAA Public Relations officer Evris Huggins Collins reached out to the Athletic Federation Executive and expressed his interest to represent St.Kitts-Nevis in Future World Events. Huggins said ““Kim Collins wrote to the executive and congratulated the new executive and expressed his intent to participate in future competitions and our executive discussed it and that is just step one in the right direction. We are definitely looking and hoping for a resolution in our relationship with Kim Collins as soon as possible.”
Huggins went on to state that a Committee was being set up to mediate talks between Collins and the Federation.
Huggins announced “The discussions have already began at SKNAAA level. I am happy to announce we have decided to put together a committee who would be able to address the existing relationships with our athletes.
“The focal point is the issue surrounding Mr. Collins. That group would be charged to contact the athlete and try fix whatever relationships that is.”
The fact that Collins has once again been left out of the SKN Team seems to suggest that discussions were not successful or remain ongoing .
Collins is regarded as one of the Elite Athletes in the World and is also described as one of the most loved and popular athletes in athletics today.
He was recently inducted into the TCU Athletics Hall of Fame and is widely regarded as one of the top CARIBBEAN sprinters of all times.
One observer describes Collins snub as a “dam shame !”
