Ms. Heather A. Archibald of St. Kitts and Nevis is among an elite group of talented Bronx residents who will be recognized by the Bronx Council of the Arts (BCA) on Thursday June 21, 2018 for their exceptional work in media, visual, literary and the performing arts.  Each awardee will claim the prestigious title dubbed, the Bronx Recognizes its Own (BRIO) award.

Heather is one of several winners who have been involved in a one-time public service activity known as Artist for Community Enrichment (ACE).

Like her colleagues, Heather was selected for the prestigious award based solely on the artistic excellence of the work submitted and judged anonymously by a panel of art professionals from outside of the Bronx who work in each respective field. Her short story submission is entitled “Crowded Harbor.”

Heather is no stranger to the arts.

An educator by profession, she has undergone extensive training in poetry and fiction and has written hundreds of poems and other works. In her book Home-Home, published in 2016, Heather uses her exceptional command of the English language to take readers on a poetic journey to an island paradise called St. Kitts and Nevis. She creatively speaks to the simpler lifestyle of the islands and the feeling of “missing home.”

Several poems from her book Home-Home include ‘Ode to the Breadfruit Trees,’ ‘My Great Great Grandfather Planted,’ ‘Hauling Sail,’ ‘Water Girl,’ and ‘Raw Sugar.’ In these and other poems, Heather tells of her own yearning for Home given the distance she has journeyed across the Atlantic Ocean in her quest to dream beyond the familiar horizons of home.

The well-known poet has also been featured in projects such as ‘The Caribbean Writer,’ ‘Mom Egg Review,’ and ‘A River of Stories: Tales and Poems across the Commonwealth.’ In 2000, Heather published a book of poems titled Pregnant These Past Twenty Years. Certainly, through her work, Heather has brought to life the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, which she loves deeply.

The Bronx Council of the Arts (BCA) is a private, non-profit membership organization that has been the official cultural agency of Bronx County since 1962.  Recognized nationally as a leading arts service organization in providing cultural services and arts programs, BCA serves a multicultural constituency of almost 1.4 million residents. BCA provides an array of services to 5,000 artists and more than 250 arts and community-based organizations.

This esteemed honor is yet another validation of Heather Archibald’s work.

The community of St. Kitts & Nevis Nationals in the Diaspora extends warm and sincere congratulations to Heather on this noble honor.

Ms. Heather Archibald is the daughter of the late George Washington Archibald who was renowned for his service in education and his radical and fearless social activism.
