President Tsai Ing-wen says the Caribbean nation of St Kitts and Nevis is Taiwan’s most earnest friend. Tsai was speaking on Thursday while meeting the country’s prime minister, Timothy Harris.
Tsai said St Kitts and Nevis has shown long-term support for Taiwan’s participation in the World Health Assembly, the United Nations and other international organizations. Tsai especially thanked Harris for personally voicing his support for Taiwan at the UN General Assembly in 2015 and 2016.
“This year the St Kitts and Nevis government greatly supported Taiwan’s participation in the WHA,” said Tsai. “We hope in the future that the prime minister will continue to support Taiwan’s international participation so that we can share our experiences in public health, medical expertise, aviation safety and sustainable development with the world. We hope to be a responsible nation and to contribute more to the world.”
Taiwan established diplomatic ties with the Caribbean country when it gained independence in 1983. Tsai said the two countries have supported each other for many years in the international community. They have worked together in areas such as infrastructure, education, culture, agricultural science and technology. Tsai said she hopes for more mutually beneficial cooperation in the future.
