Wickham says New UNITY Government on St.Kitts-Nevis Doing Well
Basseterre, St.Kitts (July 28th 2015):- Noted Caribbean Pollster and Political Scientist Peter Wickham has declared that the newly elected Dr. Timothy Harris led Team UNITY Administration in St.Kitts-Nevis is doing well. He said that with the backdrop of the post elections pronouncements of the Dr. Denzil Douglas led Opposition declaring that the government would not last 3 months.
Wickham told St.Kitts Media House WINN FM that the UNITY government has fulfilled some of the things they had promised including some promises to Nevis.
Wickham came to prominence in St.Kitts-Nevis as the Dr. Denzil Douglas led Labour Party Pollster and some say Political Advisor as well during the 2004 and 2010 campaigns. He correctly predicted the outcomes of both elections. He also correctly predicted the most recent election on February 16th when he declared before the elections that the Douglas led administration would have an uphill battle to maintain power. Wickham further stated in an article published in the Nation News that the Privy Council decision to essentially maintain traditional electoral boundaries AS opposed to proposed changes by the ruling Dr Douglas led Labour government was a powerful blow to Dr Douglas and a tremendous boost to Team UNITY. He suggested that he could not see Dr Douglas and his party recovering from the heavy blow which the Privy Council handed.
Wickham went on to address the issue of victimization which the Opposition Labour Party has been trying to use to keep themselves and their base energized. They have also latched on to the prevalent crime issue which has been plaguing the country for now well over a decade. Wickham gave his opinion on both issues with relation to the now 100 days plus old Team UNITY Government . He told WINN FM that the St. Kitts and Nevis Labour Party opposition accusations of victimization and the criticism of the handling of crime by the new administration is not reasonable. He said that Crime under the UNITY government is not any worst than it was previously. Wickham went on to state that it was not unreasonable for a party like PAM with the most seats of any single party in the team UNITY and the parliament and who has been in Opposition for over 20 years to want to place some of their key supporters in positions.
Based on Wickhams statement therefore it certainly would not be unreasonable for certain political appointees of the last administration to be shifted. These moves cannot be labeled as victimization as all political appointees and appointments made based solely on politics are aware that they hold their positions at the behest of the ruling party in government.
Over the first 100 days in office the new Team UNITY Administration have been able to fulfill a number of manifesto promises including the removal of VAT From Food, $16 million payment to former Sugar Workers who were short changed in the payments after the industry closed in 2005, the granting of an immigration amnesty for foreign nationals, $10 Million budgetary support payment to the NIA, the Removal of VAT on Funeral Expenses and Medicines plus more.
