St. Kitts and Nevis kicked off its CONCACAF Caribbean U-20 Women’s qualifier on a sour note with a 12-0 drubbing from Haiti at the Warner Park football stadium Wednesday night. The second of the double header, Haiti came ready to play and dominated possession, delivered deft passing and ran riot on the flanks to put the home side to the sword. Eight goals were scored in the first half and the remaining four in the second half. Nerilla Mondesir, Haiti’s striker was on fire delivering the first blow in the 6th minute, two minutes later and the 16th minute. She was joined in by Magdala Macean who scored in the 27th minute, then Mondesir again from the penalty spot in the 32nd minute. If that was not enough, Sherley Juedy added to the rapidly growing tally in the 35th minute before Mondesir scoring again in the 44th minute and Melcie Dumonay just before halftime in the 45th minute.

In the second half St. Kitts and Nevis came out a bit more forceful trying to get balls into the attacking third and made a shot on target. But Haiti again was too strong for the young sugar girls and scored four more goals. Mondesir got another goal in the 62nd minute before being replaced by Danielle Etienne who also joined the party with a goal of her own in the 90th minute. Roseline Eloissant struck twice in the 68th and 74th minutes of play.
As if the proceedings were not already going awry for St. Kitts and Nevis, one of its defenders Dalencia Roberts, was taken to the JNF Hospital for a concussion injury, but up to sports time, was reported to be conscious. Coach Shanda Wilkinson of St. Kitts and Nevis, said the lopsided outcome was a result of the home side playing a more defensive game. “We were lacking in the defense. We have to work on a lot of things. As you can see, some of the players got injured and that took a lot away from the game,” she said. “We are just going to move on and come with better tactics for the next game.”
A satisfied Haiti Coach Charles Fiorda, in commenting on her team’s performance said: “This is a step towards our goal because our goal is to get a ticket for the second round,” she said adding that her team will have to be better for the next game against Jamaica on Friday.
In the first match of the double header, Jamaica settled for a 1-0 win over the Dominican Republic. Alufoloshade Adomoluken was the goal scorer in the 61st minute of play. Coach Lorne Donaldson was pleased to get the win for the opening match, considering his team did not have much playing time prior to the tournament. “I think our midfielders were winning balls early and getting it to our forwards because we are creating numerous chances. It’s always good to get the first win under your belt. That will give us a little more confidence going into the next game,” he said, commending the Dominican Republic, who he said is a “good team.” The competition continues on Friday at 5pm when the winners Haiti and Jamaica will face each other followed by St. Kitts and Nevis vs. the Dominican Republic at 7:30pm at the Warner Park.
