In an article written by Jason Clenfield and Pavel Aleyev and published in the Bloomberg Businessweek Roger Ver an ex-U.S. citizen, ex-convict, millionaire investor, self-described libertarian, and founder of Passports for Bitcoin.com touts
the ever-expanding universe of what you can buy with bitcoins which includes a hotel stay in Rome, a kimono in Tokyo, and cable TV in the U.S. Ver, a pioneer investor in bitcoin startups, now says he can add citizenship to the list.
Specifically, that’s the right to live in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.
The Bitcoin for Passports offer was announced just a few months ago after Ver himself got his St.Kitts-Nevis Passport in February of this year.
Ver citizenship application according to the Bloomberg Business article was processed by Paul Bilzerian who has partnered with Ver in the bitcoin for passports.com. Bilzerian is a former corporate raider who moved to St. Kitts after long battles with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and two stints in prison for securities fraud and conspiracy to defraud the government of millions.
With the US issuing an advisory highlighting the lack of due diligence and lax controls with regards to the SKN CBI programme the revelation by Ver that his partner and the service provider who facilitated his citizenship is an ex-con who was sent to prison twice for Securities Fraud raises some red flags in the industry. How does someone with such a colorful past be granted a license to sell passports? There is also a prevailing bone of contention within the industry on the twin-islands where local service providers are of the view that these services should be limited to locals only. But as a citizen, whether economic or otherwise, how can Bilazarean be denied an opportunity. His imprisonment on securities fraud no-less, definitely raises eyebrows.
Ver and Bilzerian bonded over the belief they’d been targeted by U.S. authorities, according to Ver in the Bloomberg Article. Together, they started passports for bitcoin.com in April, Ver said.
In the 90’s Bilzerian was found guilty on nine counts including conspiracy, making false statements, and securities and tax law violations. Judge Robert Joseph Ward sentenced Bilzerian to four years in prison and a fine of $1.5 million. Bilzerian was permitted to remain free pending appeal. Bilzerian’s appeal came before the Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, which ruled against him, finding no merit in his argument that his trial had been unfair. He served some time at the Federal Prison Camp, Eglin in Fort Walton Beach, Florida but was allowed to serve the balance of his sentence under house arrest .
The Roger Ver , Paul Bilazarean partnership revelation comes after the recent US advisory regarding the SKN CBI programme and the subsequent revelation of at least 3 International fugitives who have St.Kitts-Nevis Passports.
