Strengthening of the SSU and the establishment Crime Task Force among New Crime Fighting Initiatives
A number of Crime Fighting Initiatives were announced yesterday June 30th by Prime MINISTER and Minister of National Security Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris during the first working session of parliament under the Team UNITY government
Among the initiatives is a joint multi-agency operations task force comprising of Police, Customs, Defence Force and Prison is being formed and will be fully functional by September 2015. This new entity will share intelligence, plan and execute joint operations to suppress crime and criminal activities. “This will bridge the divide between these agencies and utilize the unique skills and resources of each agency in order to achieve the common purpose,” Dr Harris announced.
Dr. Harris also stated that steps have been taken to strengthen the Special Services Unit, (SSU) through the amalgamation of several tactical units and the restructuring of the leadership, roles and functioning of the new entity. This he stated, is intended to improve the operational capability of our tactical wing.The Police are involved with discussion with the Defence Force to facilitate continuation of the amalgamation of tactical units to ultimately provide a more robust 24-hour capability, with on-going patrols sustained on a daily basis.
“The new arrangement has already begun to bear fruits. Over the last two weeks joint high visibility operations with the Defence Force, Customs and Ross University K9 Units, were conducted in Cayon, Newtown, McKnight, Shadwell, Conaree and La Guerite,” PM Harris reported
Although recent crime statistics has shown a general decrease in crimes over similar period last year the decades old problem of murders and homicides continue.
