Roosevelt Skerrit, CARICOM Chairman and Dominica’s Prime Minister, Set to Champion Climate Action at COP28 in Dubai
As the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) kicks off in Dubai this week, the spotlight is on Roosevelt Skerrit, the Chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and Prime Minister of Dominica. Confirmed during a recent press briefing, PM Skerrit is poised to address the global audience at the Conference on December 1 and 2.
A pivotal moment in the conference will be Skerrit’s participation in announcing the Green Climate Fund’s support for the Caribbean General Coordination Program. This initiative is a crucial step toward achieving sustainable development goals in the region.
This year’s COP28 agenda focuses on the Global Stocktake, where participating nations will report on their climate actions post-Paris Agreement. Skerrit, in his role as CARICOM President, expresses confidence in securing commitments from developed countries to provide essential funding to combat the escalating climate crisis.
Skerrit emphasized, “We need this COP to be an action that delivers on the promises of developed nations to provide the much-needed funding to address the worsening climate situation.” CARICOM, actively seeking funds for sustainable development, sees this conference as an opportunity to engage with developed nations and explore solutions to mitigate climate change impacts.
With COP28 running from November 30 to December 12, all eyes are on the diplomatic efforts led by Roosevelt Skerrit as he strives to ensure actionable commitments toward a climate-conscious world.
