After Darren Sammy, former captain of the West Indies Cricket team, made the announcement on Friday morning Via a Facebook post, a new trend began.
Disappointed Saint Lucian fans took a stand and started a movement spearheaded by a few of St. Lucia’s Young Leaders to ensure that this matter gets international recognition and sends a strong message to the Members of the WICB. The phrase ‘No Sammy-NO cricket’ became the new song, being sang by many Facebook users leading to a much anticipated protest.
While many were unsure of their decision to either ‘Boycott the match’ or ‘Protest outside the grounds of the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium’, participants of the protest concluded on Saturday, 6th August 2016 in a group created for supporters of Darren Sammy.
A protest is scheduled for Tuesday 9th August 2016, at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium from 10am. According to the founder of the Movement, Cassie Emmanuel, this protest serves to raise awareness that supporters of the cricket hero were not satisfied with the manner in which the W.I.C.B dismissed one of their very own, former Captain of the West Indies Cricket, Team Darren Sammy. Majority believed the manner in which Sammy was informed of the Boards decision to have him removed was disrespectful and done informally.
Many supporters have shown interest in being part of Tuesday’s protest. However, the question is still unanswered, ‘If Sammy was one of the West Indies most successful leaders then why was he sacked?”
