PM Drew Warns of Rising Cancer Cases in SKN, Links Obesity and Processed Meats to Increased Risk

Basseterre, St. Kitts – February 6th , 2025– Prime Minister Dr. Hon. Terrance Drew has revealed that cancer is now the leading cause of death in St. Kitts and Nevis, surpassing cardiovascular diseases, strokes, and infectious diseases. In a World Cancer Day social media post, PM Drew pointed to obesity, processed red meat consumption, and lack of exercise as key risk factors contributing to the increasing number of cancer cases.
“Today is World Cancer Day. Cancer has become the number one killer of our people here in St. Kitts and Nevis, surpassing cardiovascular diseases, strokes, and infectious diseases,” PM Drew stated.
He urged citizens to adopt healthier lifestyles, eat nutritious foods, and engage in regular exercise to lower their risk of developing cancer.
Under the previous Dr. Hon. Timothy Harris-led Team Unity administration, national campaigns like SKN Moves were launched to promote physical fitness, encouraging citizens to adopt active and healthier lifestyles.
Call for Transparency on Cancer Statistics
With cancer now officially identified as the number one cause of death in the federation, citizens are demanding a comprehensive investigation into all potential causes—beyond diet and exercise.
