PAHO Engaged to Investigate Health Hazards at Alexandra Hospital After Shocking Social Media Photos Surface

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has been engaged to address critical health hazards at the Alexandra Hospital in Nevis following the circulation of shocking images on social media showing mold infestation in patient rooms, staff areas, and labs. The photographs, which sparked public outrage, have prompted the Ministry of Health to issue a statement confirming that the areas depicted in the images are indeed part of the hospital, contrary to claims made by some that the photos were fabricated or not from the Alexandra Hospital.
The Ministry of Health’s statement, issued on January 20, 2025, clarified that the affected areas were no longer in use for patient care or staff accommodation. These areas, which once housed laboratory services, records storage, and physiotherapy, had been abandoned due to health concerns that had reportedly led to illness among both hospital staff and patients.
The Ministry emphasized its commitment to providing quality care and maintaining the safety and well-being of both healthcare workers and the public. “These images are a deliberate attempt to mislead the general public. The areas pictured are not currently occupied by staff or patients,” the statement read.
In response to the alarming health risks highlighted by the photographs, the Ministry has opted for a comprehensive, long-term solution. A thorough investigation into the root causes of the issue has been underway since late 2024, with experts from PAHO working alongside the island’s Environmental Health Department to assess the situation. Their collaboration aims to develop a detailed plan for remediation and the elimination of health hazards in the affected areas.
The Ministry confirmed that once the PAHO team submits their recommendations, swift action will be taken to implement necessary corrective measures. “The Ministry will take swift action to implement the necessary remedial measures once the detailed recommendations are received,” the statement assured the public.
This incident has brought to light serious concerns about the state of the hospital’s infrastructure, and the Ministry of Health’s decision to engage PAHO reflects the gravity with which they are approaching the matter. As investigations continue and solutions are sought, the Ministry reiterated its dedication to improving the healthcare environment for the people of Nevis.
“We thank you for your understanding as we continue to improve our healthcare infrastructure for the benefit of all,” the statement concluded.
