One of the first big clashes of the Premier League season ended in a 1-1 statement on Sunday night. S.L Horsfords St. Pauls and Winners Circle Newtown United F.C. drew their match in a highly entertaining encounter. St. Pauls dominated the first half and was the first to get on the score sheet courtesy of Jovaughn Leader 33rd min. But Newtown came out in the second half with a renewed sense of purpose, pinning St. Pauls on the back foot. They finally earned their reward in the 86th minute from a Johannes Mitcham wonder strike inside the 18 yard box.
In the end, Newtown coach Anthony ‘Nets’ Isaac, conceded that at halftime, they realized the need to press their opponents to get a result from the match. “We had a good game in the first half but the results show that St. Pauls was the better team in the first half. But we go back out in the second half and execute what we do on the training ground,” Isaac said. Ahead of another big match up against Hobson Enterprises Garden Hotspurs this coming weekend, Coach Isaac understands the need to tweak their approach to the game.
For St. Pauls coach Austin Huggins, they had to change their approach in the second half due to injuries to two of their main players. “We played to our formation, we played to the strategy that we talked about in the dressing room and what we worked on the training pitch. Second half we had to make some tactical changes because one or two player had to be removed due to injury,” Huggins disclosed.
The rest of the weekend was filled with football action. Also on Sunday defending champions Flow 4G Cayon Rockets came from behind to beat Elco Ltd St. Peters F.C. 3-2. St. Peters took a 2-0 midway in the first half with Kareem Simmonds in the 24th minute and DamiloOloyede in the 27th minute. Evansroy Barnes got one back for Cayon in the 45th minute before halftime, while his teammates Nigel Thom and Alex Charles finished off the game in the 78th and 83rd minute respectfully. Earlier on Sunday, TGE Dieppe Bay Eagles edged St. Thomas Trinity Strikers 1-0. The lone goal came from Glenville Gumbs in the 26th minute.
On Saturday, SOL IAS Conaree F.C. in a highly competitive encounter drew 0-0 all with Rams Village Superstars. Conaree thought they were due a penalty in the final minutes of the game with what appeared to be a foul on their player Jean Gardy. But Coach Alexis Morris was pleased with his team’s performance. Rams Village Superstar Coach Leroy Liburd is not satisfied with just a point, but said the performance of his players was slightly better than in their previous encounter.
In Saturday’s earlier match Fast Cash SPD United grabbed a big point over Hobson Enterprises Garden Hotspurs with a 2-2 draw. Scoring for SPD United were Xavier French and Niquan Phipps with Tiran Hanley and Tahir Hanley each scoring for Spurs. Below are the upcoming matches this weekend:
